THE club is delighted to announce that the public have voted for us to become Reading Raiders RLFC.
Some 20-odd years since the first version of the Raiders were in their pomp, the public have voted for the newly-formed team to resurrect the name.
The votes, collected through online votes and a handwritten tally kept by the Chairman, Andrew Belt, were as follows:
Raiders – 83 King – 20 Wreckers – 17 Troopers – 12 Roar – 11 Rapids – 5
Mr Belt said:
“It’s great to finally be able to finalise our name and this will allow us to create a new badge, build the Reading Raiders brand and register with the RFL.
“It’s been huge fun conducting a public vote and I was shocked at the popularity of Raiders. From the off, Raiders soared into an unassailable lead so hopefully the name will resonate with Reading’s sporting public.
“We felt as a committee that it would be good PR for the club and so it has proved with the story resulting in being interviewed by BBC Radio Berkshire, along with support from the Reading Chronicle and a good buy-in from the public on our social media channels.”
The Raiders will be unveiling their new badge soon and aim to launch at the Brighton 9s tournament on Saturday 25 June.
